background
Kalila Taroob Assaf joined Crownstone Advocates in its early years after a decade advising international banks and financial institutions on Malta's EU-accession-era regulatory reforms. She has led the firm's regulatory and fintech practice through Malta's emergence as a hub for iGaming and virtual financial assets, and regularly advises the MFSA and MGA-licensed operators on compliance frameworks. She chairs the firm's Malta office.
That decade inside the banking sector before she ever advised it from the outside shapes how she reads a regulatory file — less as a compliance exercise to be satisfied on paper, and more as a question of whether an institution's actual internal process would survive a genuinely sceptical examiner. She applies the same standard to the firm's own client onboarding as she recommends to MFSA- and MGA-licensed clients, a point she has made deliberately rather than treating it as a private internal matter.

how Kalila works
Kalila's regulatory advice is built around the ISO 9001 discipline she helped embed at the firm — documented procedure for how a file is opened, reviewed, and closed, checked by an internal audit function rather than taken on trust. On corporate and fintech mandates that translates into requiring every substantive filing to pass through a reviewer who was not the original drafter, on the view that a firm asking regulators to trust its clients' compliance frameworks needs an unusually clean one of its own.
